Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Orhan Gurbuz was born in Turkey in 1939. He came to the U.S. in 1963 to study civil engineering at Iowa State University in Ames. He and his Turkish-born wife Meral’s son and daughter were born in Ames. The family returned to Turkey for two years and then came back to Ames so Orhan could get his Ph.D. in structural engineering. In 1974, Orhan was offered a job with Bechtel Corp.and moved his family to Southern California. Portrait of Orhan Gurbuz with his wife, Meral and his daughter, Gamze and son, Robert taken in 1983 in Los Angeles before his kids moved to study in Berkeley.
