Description
The US Lightship #70, "San Francisco," of the US Coastal Lighthouse Service, on duty. The San Francisco participated in the effort, funded by the San Francisco Call [newspaper], to transmit the news of the April 1899 arrival of the USS Sherman, carrying California troops back from the Phillipines at the end of the war with Spain. An operator stationed on the Lightship transmitted "Sherman is sighted" to a relay station seven miles away, at the Cliff House (Ocean Beach). This is considered the first use of wireless telegraphy for a ship-to-shore message.
