Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the earthquake, Ken Van Velsor was a Transportation Planner for Caltrans. In this interview Ken discusses his and his wife Joan's - a geologist for Caltrans - experience inspecting potential damage at Devil's Slide on Route 101. Ken also discusses the atmosphere of the Oak Street Office during the week after the Loma Prieta Earthquake as he acted as a screener to aid in the crush of media and public inquiries.
