Description
Annotation translation: "Almost every market in Canton Province has at least one tall building, the so-called pawn shop. Especially in peaceful times [sic] the chinese farmer pawns his winter clothes and then his blankets in the spring...."
Annotation: "Auf jedem Markt der Kantonprovinz erhebt sich meistens ein hoher Bau, das sog. Pfandhaus. Besonders in ruhigen Zeiten verpfändet der chin. Bauer im Frühjahr seine Winterkleider & Decken & um im Spätjahr dieselben wieder einzulösen, muss er vielfach sein Ackergerät ins Pfandhaus tragen. Die Zinsen für verpfändete Gegenstände betragen bis zu 36%, doch sagen die Leute 'wenn wir Geld brauchen, können wir es nur auf diesem Wege erhalten', es gibt eben in China keine Darlehenskasse & ein Reicher leiht nur gegen genügend Sicherheit Geld zu 36% aus. Ueberdies sagen die Bauern, wenn wir unsre Sachen ins Pfandhaus bringen, sind sie sehr gut aufbewahrt & in der Tat, wenn man ein solches Pfandhaus besucht, so findet man dass grösste Reinlichkeit & Ordnung herrscht. Hinter den festen, einbruchsichern Mauern liegen auf hohen Gestellen sämtliche verpfändete Gegenstände aufgestappelt [sic]."
