Description
Scope/Content: Winfield Daily Courier newspaper article from the 1980s titled, "Refugee Population Growing," describes how the population of refugees in Kansas may double in the next five years, with most being young people who fled Communist takeovers in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. They come from various backgrounds and are facing challenges adjusting to the new culture, with language being the biggest obstacle. 150 settled in Winfield with the first Laotian family sponsored by a church in 1978. They are seeking new homes, jobs, and to make friends with Americans.
