Bust-length portrait.
Born in St. Lawrence County, New York in 1829 to Otis and Laura (Welsh) Barber. Came to California in 1853 via Nicaragua route in steamer Independence. In California, worked in variety of occupations - gold miner (in Folsom, Mormon Island, Auburn, Red Dog, Marysville); "China trade," hauling Chinese laborers to and from mines; merchant (Woodland); returning to Sacramento operated Phoenix Mill; beginning in 1884, purchased ranch land including Capay Valley ranch, River Ranch. Died in 1911.
