Description
As early as the mid-19th century, American churches conducted evening language classes to assist Chinese immigrants in the reading of scripture. In Sacramento, it was Eliza Willsie and Mary Allen’s Baptist Mission at 907 Fifth St. Pictured in circa 1922 in front of the Sacramento County Courthouse at 615 I St. are several mission members. In the back row, and second from left, with hat on, is Mary Allen. In the middle row, second from left to right are Mrs. Dong Haw, Florence Sun, Anna Yuke, Ruby Yuke, Grace Chun, unknown, and Rose Abe. In the front row, left to right, are Rose Dong, Bill Dong, Richard Dong, Hattie Chun, Donald Chun, Lily Dong, Jerry Dong, Stephen Lee and Helen Yee.
