Description
Annotation translation: "Banso chief. He is one of the biggest chiefs in the Grassfields and has 300 wives of his own. In this picture he sits on a king's stool, carved from a single piece of wood. The leopards symbolise power. No subject of the chief's may sit on such a stool. This man favours the Basel Mission. At first however, he mistrusted them, after his earlier experiences with the Catholics. Rev. Zürcher understood how to win his trust. He maintained close contact with him, told him exactly what he would be preaching to his people, and, after every journey [in Banso], he reported in detail to the King what he had experienced." Note translation: Probably carved in Babanki (PV 03.2002). Stamped: "Museum der Basler Mission, Basel, Missionsstrasse 21."
