Image of train leaving Tavern of Tamalpais. Printed caption reads, "Summit of Mt. Tamalpais (2,592 feet) California. Mountain train leaving tavern. Britton & Rey, San Francisco 484." The Tavern of Tamalpais was a combination hotel and restaurant which opened in 1896 and was sometimes referred to as Summit Tavern or Tamalpais Tavern. The Tavern burned to the ground in a 1923 fire, but was rebuilt and reopened in 1924. The Tavern continued to operate until 1950, when it was razed by the Marin Municipal Water District. Pre-1916
