This is an edited transcript of an oral history interview of Michael Gerald (Jerry) Huben conducted by Volker Janssen. Topics covered in the interview include:Aero ITI; role of computers in aircraft design; secrecy and classification; and workforce demographics. Michael Gerald (Jerry) Huben was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on February 27, 1921. After high school he came to California in 1939 to study at Aero Industries Technical Institute (Aero ITI) in Glendale. He graduated from Aero ITI in 1941 and took a job at Vought-Sikorsky, but after less than a month he returned to California for a job at Northrop in November 1941, first as a riveter and soon promoted to engineer. During the war he worked on the P-61 and the B-35 and B-49 flying wings; after the war he worked on the F-89, the A-9 proposal, the F-5, the YF-17 and F-18, and the YF-23.
