Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.
The purpose of the "Subversive Activities in America First Committee" report, prepared by the Americanism Committee of the American Legion, 17th District, California, was to describe the results of the investigation into suspicions that the America First organization had been infiltrated by Nazi sympathizers and/or agents. The report states: "There is every indication that [the subversives] have joined the America First movement for the express purpose of presenting their subversive propaganda to those sincere isolationists who have been attracted to meetings of America First." 11 x 8.5 in.
