Description
June 24, 1876 Letter written by and signed by Robert Morris, more widely known as the creator of the Order of the Eastern Star, but also involved in many interesting events in 19th century Masonic movements, schisms and scandals. The letter is addressed to an unknown brother, but the printed, boxed, header indicates that "Correspondence to be Addressed to Care of Alex G. Abell, Esq. Grand Secretary (Grand Lodge of F. & A.M. of California--AK); Rob. Morris, Ll.D. and James G. Savage, Private Secretary" On the reverse is a printing of "Excerpts from Letters, Newspaper Notices, and Commendatory Resolutions of Masonic Lodges" The full transcription of the letter is as follows: My Dear Brother I have your favor of June 23 covering (?) check for $116.28. This is equivalent on my subscription list to $132 and is in full. You have treated me with generosity in this matter and I shall not forget it. If I live, I shall see Bro. E.T. Rogers this coming winter in London, and should you entrust me with any message to him I will deliver it. I shall be on the Overland Train tomorrow at 1pm at Sacramento on my way east and would very much like to give your hand a farewell shake. With grateful esteem Rob Morris **A Commentary on this letter and its references by R. Stephen Doan, P.G.M (1992-1993), dated October 13, 2009: "E. T. Rogers is mentioned several times in Morris's book, Freemasonry in the Holy Land, in which Morris wrote about his 1868 trip there. Rogers was the Master of Palestine Lodge No. 415, a lodge under the Grand Lodge of Scotland working in Arabic. He translated the English rituals into Arabic. He was the British Consul in Beirut, Haifa and Damascus. He was also the financial agent for the Khedive and the Khedive's superintendent of public instruction. I wonder how Abell knew Rogers?"
