Title supplied by cataloger. Golden State Mutual was the largest black-owned insurance company west of the Mississippi. Its business expanded into a five-story building on the corner of Western and Adams Boulevards that was designed by Paul R. Williams. Its founders started the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Co. Afro-American Art Collection. This photo of the lobby shows a bronze sculpture of one of the founders that was commissioned from the Harlem Renaissance sculptor, Raymond Barthe. Next to the bust is a display cabinet with smaller busts. Photograph caption reads: "This bust of William Nickerson Jr. by Raymond [sic] Barthe´ is part of the grand display of black art in the lobby of Golden State Mutual Life Insurance building."
