The United States Smelting, Refining, and Mining Company acquired the Mammoth mine in 1904 and began large scale mining operations for copper in 1905 and later mined zinc as well during World War I. The mine operated continuously from 1905 to 1919, was closed from 1919 to 1923, re-opened late in 1923 and was again suspended in 1925. The mine lies now beneath the water of Shasta Lake.
