The Oakwood School was founded in 1951 by a small group of parents including Sydney and Elizabeth Harmon, Ross and Wendy Cabeen, and actor Robert Ryan and his wife Jessica who opened the school's first campus in their backyard. Oakwood's progressive approach places an emphasis on the arts, sciences, and humanities. The K-12 school has two campuses; the elementary campus is located at 11230 Moorpark St. and the secondary campus is located at 11600 Magnolia Blvd. Photograph caption dated November 25, 1959 reads, "Actor Robert Ryan, one of founders of Oakwood School in North Hollywood, shows six Oakwood students some of paintings to be included in school's first Art Fair, set for Saturday and Sunday."
