The clerk stands at the center of the image, wearing a tattered shirt, a cap and an apron, clasping his hands in front of him at his waist. In the background two other men can be seen with their backs to the viewer, while to the right hanging boots can be seen through a shop window along with the faint outline of a worker inside. To the left, an outdoor counter can be seen stacked with small, identical boxes.
