From the right the trunk of the "Fallen Monarch" reaches diagonally into the photograph; on top of the trunk stands a group of cavalry (part of the Dept. of the Pacific) in a line with the two front horsemen perpendicular to the line behind them; in front of the trunk and on the road stands another line of cavalry who stand perpendicular to the trunk; the road echoes the line of the fallen trunk; behind the cavalry and the trunk is a grove of evergreens.
