Description
Familie Fokken vorm ersten Wohnhaus der Makumira-Rodung ("Family Albert Fokken in front of the first house of the Makumira clearing"). Photograph of Albert Fokken, Erna Fokken and a child (Hanna) on a tree trunk. Other tree trunks and large trees are around them. A thatched house is to the right.
Albert Fokken (1885-1963), from East Friesland, served the Leipzig Mission as a craftsman in Arusha from 1909 to 1911. Afterwards he stayed for one year in Shira before moving to Marangu in 1912. In 1914 he left the mission to work as a constructor and planter in Arusha. After the First World War he came back to the mission in 1926 and stayed until 1940. He worked as a builder in Shigatini, Nkoaranga and Makumira. After the death of his first wife, Erna Scharmann, he married the missionary sister Hanna Schliemann in 1931.
