Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph shows the police "mug shot" of a man identified as Frederich B. McDonald, 54, who was serving 180 days in a Burbank jail for writing bad checks. During his incarceration, Mr. McDonald managed to steal a deputy sheriff's gun, and another's car and escaped, driving to his home, where he confronted his estranged wife, Martha. He accused her of not visiting him in jail, nor writing to him, and he proceeded to fire five shots into her torso. He then turned the gun onto himself and shot himself in the head, while his two young sons looked on in horror. When police arrived at the home minutes later, McDonald was dead. His wife was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Photograph dated January 29, 1964.
