Interior screens separate the functions in the open plan living zone of the Goodrich house and yet still keep the volume spacious.
For the Calvin Goodrich house, Whitney Smith designed a "petal" roof: four identical gables, floating above triangular clerestories and supported by posts at the four corners. Smith possibly borrowed the idea of the "petal" roof from his mentor Harwell Harris.
