Description
In this July 4, 1931 photograph, a group of ax-carrying young men representing Capital Camp make their way eastward on K Street, between Ninth and 10th streets. Independence Day of 1931 proved a memorable one in Sacramento: Seventeen fires were started throughout the city on July 4 alone from fireworks, while more than 30 were started in the five days leading up to the holiday. So severe was the outbreak that Fire Chief M.J. Dunphy proposed a ban on the sale of fireworks within city limits. The city and the Southside Improvement Club gave a controlled show at Southside Park at Eighth and S streets. The photograph also shows the Sierra Theater at 909 K St., Hale Brothers Department Store at 825 K St., Chinn-Beretta Optical Company at 901 K St., Stanley's Men's Clothing at 905 K St., the Savoy Coffee Shop, Purnell’s Stationery Company at 915 K St., and the Vienna Restaurant Bakery at 917 K St.
