Description: Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer, sketched 1861, of Mission San Carlos at the mouth of the river Carmelo. A man on horseback rides in front of a ox cart. Another man leads several horses behind the cart. A small copse of old trees is at right. In the background are the mission ruins. A domed bell tower and a smaller campanario straddle the main entry. A couple of smaller buildings stand in front of the church. The ocean is visible in beyond the mission. A ship is visible in the distance. About 15 birds fly overhead as the rays of the sun break through the clouds. Caption reads: "(Sketched 1861) Ruins of the old Mission of San Carlos, at the mouth of the River Carmelo.
