Mr. Talia was mayor of the city from 1961 through 1963 and has also worked as a member of the city council and of the planning commission. July 11, 1974. Annexation of his ranch to Santa Clara. Agricultural industry, the city as a center for farmers’ business. His term on planning commission: duties, nature of work, population and size of city at that time (early Fifties), planning commission functions, working hours, popular attitudes towards growth, projected population estimate (made in the mid-Fifties). The City Council: significant issues, urban renewal; mayoralty: salary, duties. Notable changes in city (Twenties through today). Social life: town celebrations (the Portuguese fiesta, Fiesta de las Rosas, Memorial Day). Agriculture in the city. Prohibition: revenue stamps, homemade wine. Clubs and lodges. Religious groups. Social life: sports, beach trips, the Portuguese fiesta. The small town atmosphere. Popular clergymen. Shopping: goods available in Santa Clara, need for shopping out of town. Transportation: the roads, the jalopies (1920-1935). Effects of the Depression. Early industries. Family industries. Urban renewal: the old business district (Fifties). Housing (Twenties).
