Description
Captured in this circa-1955 photograph, happy customers and employees look toward the camera at Johnson’s Restaurant at 1019 10th St. Standing near the entrance is, on the right, owner George Johnson, and, on the left, his son, Eppaminondas. Also known as “Eppie,” Eppaminondas entered the restaurant business soon after his graduation from the University of Nevada, Reno. His self-titled chain, Eppie’s, was born in the mid-1960s, and would grow into a modest empire with locations in both California and Nevada. The chain folded in 2004, but its legacy was sustained by the athletic passions of Johnson with the annual “Eppie’s Great Race,” reputed to be the oldest triathlon in the world.
