Description
2008-0950 CHARTS, DIAGRAMS, TABLES, ETC.: CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS Early presentation drawings showing front elevation of Library. Details include steps, columns, portico, pediment, statues on either side of building and three statues among the columns of portico. "Weeks and Day, 933 Phelan Bldg., S.F., Architect and engineer, Feb. 3 1919" -- stamped in lower right corner. In 1914, a State Bond Act was passed for the purpose of building the California State Library and Office Building One. In 1917, the contract was awarded to Weeks & Day, a San Francisco firm. The firm's architect, Charles Peter Weeks, and its engineer, William P. Day, signed the contract on Nov. 30, 1918. Working drawings for the neoclassical design were completed in Feb. 25, 1920 and construction began on the State Library March 1924.
