Three page letter from Abraham Lincoln to the parents of Elmer E. Ellsworth on the death of their son. Elmer Ellsworth became known as the first conspicuous Union casualty on May 24, 1861. Ellsworth was shot and killed by James Jackson, the innkeeper of Marshall House in Alexandria, after Ellsworth had taken down the Confederate flag on the roof of the inn. The death became a rallying cry for the North, and his death was keenly felt by Lincoln. Ellsworth had worked for Lincoln in Springfield and was close to him.
