Description
A Maasai woman and child stand in a wooded area in the village in Northern Tanzania. The woman wears elaborate bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The women of the Maasai people take pride in their appearances. The Maasai people are prominent for the elaborate colorful necklaces and jewelry they wear. Beaded jewelry is worn daily as a symbol of wealth and social status. Both men and women in the Maasai people wear large hoops in the piercings in the earlobes. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
