The first of 17 American liberty ships that were named after African Americans, the SS Booker T. Washington was completed on August 19, 1942 and launched on September 29, 1942. Between 1942 and 1947, she had made 22 round trip voyages ferrying troops and supplies to both the Pacific and European theatres. After having been sold to a private owner 1947, she was scrapped in 1969.
Photograph caption dated September 29, 1942 reads, "Marian Anderson, noted Negro singer, breaks the traditional bottle of champagne, launching the Booker T. Washington."
