Description
Photograph of a Walapai Indian woman, the wife of Chief Shurum, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. She sits on a blanket on the ground with her legs spread, knees up, and her elbows resting on her knees. She wears a striped patterned button-up blouse and a long dark skirt. Around her neck hangs a light leather or cloth bib or apron with tassles (the chief's insignia of office), covering her right leg. Her dark hair has bangs cropped straight across and hangs to her shoulders. Her eyes are closed as she is blind. Behind her is a wooden wall partially covered in clothing or blankets.
