Description
View of the East Park Dam in Glenn County circa 1910
East Park Dam near Stonyford was the only storage faculty for the Orland irrigation project. It was built at on ideal site for a dam, except that the stream flowing into the reservoir it created did not carry much water. It was called "Little Stony Creek". Soon after it was built rainbow diversion dam had to be constructed to shunt some Big Stony Creek water behind the dam. However, the project was always in peril of running out of water, from its one reservoir 70 miles away over a porous, gravelly creekbed. In 1924 it finally happened - in a year of light rainfall. The reservoir ran dry. Irrigation stopped in mid-summer. Many farmers lost young orchards and alfalfa stands, and some were ruined and lost their ranches. Congress appropriated money to build another dam at Stony Gorge, near Elk Creek. It was completed in 1928 and its cost addedd to the debt owed to the government by the project.
