Article by Charles Handy exploring diversification of the worker portfolio and organization restructuring. Handy begins the article discussing the particular challenges of workers entering the retirement phase, or Third Age. According to Handy, this is the period in which one should become a "portfolio" person, that is, to diversify interests and do some things for money, some because they are of interest, some out of love or kindness, and some just to do them. Alongside employees building new skills, Handy prophecies that some traditional jobs will become obsolete as technology streamlines operations among different occupations. As a result organizations will "slim down" and full-time jobs will be in short supply. Therefore, a person with a good, balanced "portfolio" is an individual that has one comprised of five types of work, that is, wage work, fee work, home work, study work, and volunteer work. Handy proceeds to discuss marriage portfolios and what they consist of, stating that portfolio marriages provide necessary stability through variety, and ultimately suggests that the Third Age is the ideal age to lead the way in pursuit of portfolio lifestyles.
