Description: Commander Richard E. Byrd is shown aboard the whaling ship C.A. Larsen as he prepares to leave the Los Angeles Harbor for his first exploration of Antarctica and the South Pole, via New Zealand. He is surrounded by a group of college students who are presenting him with a fraternity banner. Byrd's dog, Igloo, is visible at his side. This event took place on October 10, 1928.
