Charles Handy thought for the day on Budget Day, Type 1 and Type 2 errors, and the idea of accountability. Handy begins the thought discussing Budget Day and how he has always thought it symbolic that Budget Day falls on Lent. He proceeds to discuss how he was taught in business school that there are two kinds of errors, getting it wrong and not getting it right enough, how most organizations don't notice the second of the two errors, and how the idea of accountability functions on the same principle of two kinds of errors. Handy goes on to talk about how it is very British, and very Christian, to focus more on the first kind of error than the second, but argues that that is not the way it is supposed to be. Instead, loving God and loving thy neighbor brings one closer to accountability and avoiding both types of errors.
