Photograph caption date stamped October 14, 1958 reads, "William G. 'Bill' Lopez, director of sports for the Los Angeles city high school system since 1933, announced his retirement today to become effective Oct. 31. Lopez, a San Fernando Valley resident, is known as the 'father' of city sports and during his service has been instrumental in making the city's athletic program one of the best in the entire nation."
