Katherine Augusta Westcott Tingley (1847-1929) was a social worker in New York when she met William Quan Judge, a mystic, esotericist, and occultist who was one of the founders of the original Theosophical Society; she would become a member of this society on October 13, 1894, becoming head of the organization upon Judge's death in 1896. In April of the same year, she announced the prospective founding of a School for the Revival of the Lost Mysteries of Antiquity (SRLMA), and 10 months later, on February 23, 1897 at Point Loma, Katherine Tingley presided at the laying of the cornerstone for SRLMA in an impressive ceremony witnessed by nearly a thousand people. On February 13, 1900, Tingley transferred the Society's international headquarters from New York City to Point Loma, California. Six months later, Tingley founded the Raja-Yoga School; by 1914, an Academy and College; and in 1919, the Theosophical University. Katherine Tingley died on July 11, 1929 at the age of 82 while on a European lecture tour. Photograph of Mrs. Katherine A. Tingley and several Counselors of the Theosophists Institute at Point Loma, Calif. Mrs. Tingley can be seen sitting on the right, wearing a long, black skirt, black jacket, and cream-color blouse. She is also pictured in the round inset on the upper left; photo circa 1896. The beautiful building partially pictured is the Academy Building of the International Theosophical Headquarters - also called the School for the Revival of the Los Mysteries of Antiquity (SRLMA).
