Description
Pictured on December 24, 1955, is Sacramento’s Tower Bridge, spanning a high-running Sacramento River. During the days prior to and after Christmas 1955, Northern California was hit with record rains that caused the American River to expand to five times its usual size, killed several people and resulted in the displacement of more than 20,000 from spots like Yuba City, Stockton and Eureka. Within the Sacramento area, Riverdale, just north of 16th Street and the American River, was viewed to be especially vulnerable.
