Description
Roberto d'Aubuisson presiding over the Constituent Assembly meeting in the capital, San Salvador, El Salvador. Other members of the assembly sit next to him. A year before, in March 1982, D'Aubuisson's party, the Nationalist Repubblican Alliance (ARENA), won a third of the seats in the Constituent Assembly. In 1993, a report published by the United Nations Commission on the Truth for El Salvador established that it was Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta who gave the order to assassinate Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero in 1980. The extreme-right Salvadoran soldier was also a leader of the death squads put in place to eliminate leftists opponents.
