Description
1 Image. Japanese orphan adopted, 17 March 1955. Tomio Nomura -- 8 years
Robert Paul. (Handout).
Supplementary material reads: "From News Bureau. Pan American Airlines. Raw negs., please develop. Photo caption and story. Eight-year old Tomio Nomura played happily today with three new American boy acquaintances in Sun Valley, Calif., oblivious to the postwar tides which swept him from a nonentity in a Japanese orphanage to adoption by foster parents in Tampa, Florida. Tomio arrived early today (Thurs. March 17) on a Pan American Airways Clipper from Tokyo to be met by Robert Paul, 7321 Satsuma, Sun Valley, electronics technician. He spent the day in play with Paul's three sons, Johnny, 5 1/2
Rickey, 3
and Larry, 1 1/2 until his evening departure on another flight to Tampa and the waiting arms of his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Pancratz. Paul, a friend of the Tampa couple who arranged the adoption under terms of the 1953 Refugee relief Act, said he met the child here as a favor to Pancratz. Neither of the Tampa couple were able to come here to meet the orphan. Paul and Pancratz became acquainted when they were roommates at Stanford in 1945, but have not seen each other since. Notes: Paul residence: POplar 52727. He hasn't much background on Florida couple. Tomio was to depart American Airlunes # 908 -- 10 9.m. March 17."
