Description
Gustave Berg came to work for Felix Mattei shortly after the latter's stagecoach stop opened in the small town of Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley, becoming the boss' closest friend and confidant. One of Clarence Mattei's most acclaimed canvases portrays his father and "Old Gus" engaged in one of their nightly pinochle games. Berg continued to work at Mattei's Tavern until his death at the age of 92 in 1937.
