Description
Caption from October 1, 1973 Sacramento Bee reads, "Jawbone Is Identitfied: The jawbone discovered recently at the Lone Star Industries gravel pit near Tracy, San Joaquin County, apparently belonged to an American mastodon. Delta College anthropology instructor Michael Seeyle, who identified the find, says hunters sought the animal for food between 10,000 and 5,000 BC. Seeyle, in the photo above, also noted that this is the first mastodon found in San Joaquin County, although bones of the mammal have been found in various other locations throughout the nation. Reproduced below is a drawing of the mammal, which stood from 7 to 9 1/2 feet high, and one of its molar teeth."
