Description
197 East Blithedale, The photo looks up the front stairs to a white, wood framed cottage. There are two double-hung windows in the front of the attic room, two mis-matched entry doors at the center of the front porch with two double-hung windows on either side of the doors. The house is seen through greenery. The attached description from the the 1983 Walk into History states, "This charming small house was built in 1906 for Daniel James Fenton, who operated a shoemaker's shop in the present Bank of America building on Corte Madera and Lytton Square. At first the family lived behind the shop where Mr. Fenton raised a magnificent rose garden as well as eight children. After living in several Mill Valley locations he had this house built by two itinerant carpenters who were going through town. Most of the lumber was going to San Francisco at the time to rebuild after the earthquake and fire so there was a limited choice of sizes. Consequently the structural timbers are much heavier than standard and it could have been a much larger house. The house was called "Roseland" and should be viewed as it was 75 years ago when it was open land suitable for gardening before the trees grew. It was occupied by Fenton descendants until recently, but it is still a residence."
