Description
This 1925 photograph shows the L Street Boxing Arena, located at 223 L Street. The ad hoc structure had been a warehouse prior to its opening in the winter of 1916. To bring it to workable function as a sports venue, walls were removed, ventilation was improved and calcimine was rolled onto walls and ceiling. In the foreground are 700 of the venues reserved seats while, in the background, are a portion of the 2,300 bleacher seats, which were squeezed into a tight 30 feet space from floor to ceiling. The structure sat several feet below street level.
