Charles Handy article on the reinvention of capitalism for the next century, and the role of business in the transformation of capitalism. Handy begins the article discussing three worries he has maintained concerning the state of capitalism and its impact on Western, industrialized countries. He expresses frustrations regarding, first, the money substituting for charity and/or love; second, the growing gap between the haves and have-nots, with most of the wealth generated at the top of society staying there; and third, the comforts of too much capitalism, creating a society in which individuals expect to be taken care of and have others provide for them. Handy proceeds to give his reasons for why he believes these changes are taking place, attributing them to individuality, independence, and the end of permanence in work, family, and communities; the fallacy of reducing life and an organization’s success to a single criterion; and, the presence and practices of mercenary organizations, where the laborer is reduced to being on hire to the highest bidder for as long as he/she is useful to the organization. Handy closes the article expressing several hopes for a better society within the practice of capitalism and in consideration of the dilemmas that come with so much freedom.
