Description
Margaret Dowd was born Margaret Lee Wosser on January 10, 1906 at Duncan's Mills in Sonoma County, California. A third-generation Californian, Margaret came to Mill Valley at the age of three, when her mother purchased a home in Blithedale Canyon. Margaret married Jack McGinnis, with whom she had two daughters. Margaret and Jack divorced after six years, and Margaret married Charles Irvine "Irv" Dowd in 1948. Margaret eventually moved to the Redwoods, where she died in 2002. In her oral history, Margaret talks about her family moving to Marin County near the turn of the century, and recounts her experiences attending Summit School and Tamalpais High School. She discusses Irv's family business, Dowd's, which specialized over the years in everything from horse boarding to home furnishings. Margaret mentions taking over the business in 1965, and talks about the 1929 fire and how Mill Valley celebrated the end of World War I. Editor's note: The transcript for this oral history differs in ways from the recording. It appears that sections of the transcript were modified or deleted for narrative flow.
