Description
Photograph of an exterior view of Oak Hall, the residence of Francis Marion "Borax" Smith in Ivy Hill, Oakland, ca.1910. The massive three-story house can be seen at left. Cylindrical towers anchor the corners of the building, and several windows can be seen. Ivy densely covers the front of the house. A covered porch is visible at center, and a neatly trimmed lawn can be seen in the foreground at right. Built in the late 1880s, this 42-room mansion (architect: Walter J. Mathews) was the centerpiece of Arbor Villa, Smith's 50-acre East Oakland estate. All of Arbor Villa, including this house, was razed and developed in 1932.
