Description
Portrait of Mrs. Elizabeth Willetts, mother of Mrs. C. Sutter. Exhibited at the Pacific Hotel, History Park, in 1978 as part of "19th Century San Jose Portraits," with the following caption: Born Elizabeth A. Hartwick in Schoharie County, New York, Mrs. Willet came to Santa Clara County in 1861 with her father. That same year she married Larry Willet, a native of Maine, and set up housekeeping on the Willet homestead near Campbell. Larry Willet raised hay and grain on the farm until he died in 1877. Instead of moving into town, Mrs. Willet took over operation of the ranch and increased its production by adding peaches and eighteen tons of apricots. In addition to running the ranch alone, Elizabeth Willet managed to raise five children. She was also an active member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church.
