Photograph was edited for publication purposes Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 7, 1954 reads "Film actress Terry Moore gives armful of toys to Sgt. Carl Folette and Ad Club President Glenn E. Carter for 'Toys for Tots' drive sponsored by Marine Corps and Los Angeles Ad Club to help needy children. Toys can be deposited in barrels at neighborhood theaters, or mailed to the Marine Reserve."
