1989-1151. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. A, leaf 34. Corner view of large 3 story building; above 2nd floor on short side of the building is written "Mebius & Drescher, Wholesale Grocers"; 2nd & 3rd floors have 9 vertical windows on short side and 13 on long side, each topped by a lintel; at corner is tall utility pole; boxes and sacks are piled in front at street level; a wagon on the left is unloading cargo; men dressed in suits and hats are seen near the corner. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Southeast corner of Front & Kay street.One of the most celebrated and elegant hotels of early Sacramento. It was constructed about 1853 and in that year was known as Sackett's Hotel. The State Treasurer's and controller's offices were located there in 1855. It changed hands in 1857, Mr. Bailey being the owner at that time. In 1861-62 , Mr. J. Beasley owned the hotel and in 1868 it was owned by John Singleton. Wm. Land owned the hotel about 1883 at which time the building was purchased by Mebius & Dreschler.When this firm took over the hotel,the following sign was found in each room 'Gentlemen, please remove your boots before going to bed'....
