Photo shows several children playing on the shore at this unidentified Southern California beach during the "Gay Nineties". Notice their swimsuits, all of which are black in color; girls wore dresses with long stockings, and boys wore long shirts and shorts underneath. A fragile-looking wooden pier can be seen on the right. The Gay Nineties refers to the decade of the 1890's. The term itself began to be used in the 1920's and artist Richard V. Cutler is credited with having penned it, after having created a series of drawings for Life Magazine entitled "the Gay Nineties".
