From left to right, presidential candidates Roberto Carpio Nicolle of the Christian Democratic Party, Alejandro Maldonado of the National Renewal and Guatemalan Christian Democracy parties, Mario Sandoval Alarcón of the National Liberation Movement, and his running mate Lionel Sisniega Oteroat a press conference. The three candidates claimed voter fraud in the 1982 elections against Ángel Aníbal Guevara. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
